關關：水鳥叫聲。雎（音居）鳩：水鳥，一名王雎，狀類鳧鷖，生有定偶，常並遊。洲：河中沙洲。窈窕：美心為窈，美狀為窕。淑：善，好。逑（通仇）：配偶。

參差：長短不齊。荇（音杏）菜：多年生水草，夏天開黃色花，嫩葉可食。流：順水之流而取之也。 寤（音務）：睡醒。寐（音妹）：睡眠。

思：語助。服：思念。悠：憂思貌。輾：半轉。反側：反身，側身。

琴：五絃或七絃樂器。瑟：二十五絃樂器。友：交好。

芼（音帽）：有選擇之意。鍾：金屬打擊樂器。鼓：皮革打擊樂器。

Cooing and wooing merrily are the ospreys， a pair。

Exquisite and virtuous is the lady，

Fit bride for me， a lord。

Long and short floating the water weed，

Left and right I pick with heed。

I dream of her regardless it is day or night。

When the courtship was failed，

I think of her regardless she is far away or in sight。

Filled with sorrow and regret，

Unable to sleep I toss and turn on the upset。

Should she give me her hand， I will befriend her with Qin and Se。
