根據神話傳說，這是上帝對這裡的人們的一種懲罰。後來，人們便用 apple of Sodom 來表達這樣的含義：something that is not worth its value，漢語中的“金玉其外，敗絮其中”、“徒有其表（的人或物）”等表達的就是這一含義。
