狼外形和狼狗相似，但吻略尖長，口稍寬闊，耳豎立不曲。尾挺直狀下垂；毛色棕灰。棲息範圍廣，適應性強，凡山地、林區、草原、荒漠、半沙漠以至凍原均有狼群生存。中國除臺灣、海南以外，各省區均產。狼既耐熱，又不畏嚴寒。夜間活動。嗅覺敏銳，聽覺良好。性殘忍而機警，極善奔跑，常採用窮追方式獲得獵物。雜食性，主要以鹿類、羚羊、兔等為食，有時亦吃昆蟲、野果或盜食豬、羊等。能耐飢，亦可盛飽。
